The Ghostbusters were a quartet of four men who became the first 'licensed paranormal exterminators', activated first in 1983.

Dr. Peter Venkman recruited longtime friends Dr. Raymond Stantz and Dr. Egon Spengler to help develop tools and apparatus to capture and contain paranormal creatures. Winston Zeddemore was hired on after the recommendation of John Constantine, who had become a reliable consultant for the inexperienced crew. Dr. Egon Spengler used an unlicensed, modified Tesla Tokamak reactor to power the energy weapons that restrained spiritual entities.

The Ghostbusters were active in New York during a particularly tumultuous number of years, from a cosmic perspective. Major planar intersections turned New York into a locus of magical forces, resulting in many spirits and semi-incorporeal entities breaching the Astral plane and manifesting as spirits of the recently dead. Their most notable achievement was the defeat of Gozer the Gozerian in New York City in 1984.

As of 1989, the Ghostbusters were more or less disbanded and turned to other careers. However, they were clued in to the nascent presence of Vigo the Carpathian, a legendary 16th century sorcerer who had been trapped in a painting bearing his likeness. The Ghostbusters successfully stopped Vigo's attempt to utterly subvert New York with a deluge of psycho-reactive ectoplasm drawn from the Astral Plane. Upon banishing Vigo fully, the ectoplasm dissolved and the city of New York returned more or less to normal.

As of 2018, the Ghostbusters are retired and moved into roles as consultants in the paranormal fields and high-energy systems.

Martians are incredibly resilient and unique creatures. An individual Martian possesses exceptional psychic talents, able to communicate wordlessly over a significant distance. Any given Martian is capable of shapeshifting to a remarkable degree, with perfect control over their bodies to the molecular level. Martians can become as hard as steel or phase through solid matter. They can fly at subsonic speeds unaided and are incredibly dense and tough, allowing them to lift substantial weight. Martians breath C02 and prefer an atmospheric temperature of around 45F. At 140F or higher, Martians actually pass out in a few minutes and may even die. Martians have a profound psychological aversion to flames and can catch fire at approximately 300F of temperature.

Green Martians share in a 'race memory'. Any experience of any member of the race can be recalled by all others. This has turned them into pacifists as a matter of social courtesy; no Martian wants to add to the suffering of their people. White Martians do not have this racial trait. There is a disease among Martians that dates back to their primordial roots: too much exposure and close psychic contact can trigger a burning conflagration. Intense emotions can rapidly spread from carrier to carrier, and closely interlinked Martians can die in short order. For this reason, Martian psychic contacts are infrequent and highly regimented affairs.

History

16,000 BCE, the Martians were a singular race called the Burning. Malevolent and hostile, their relative lack of technical capability kept them from being a threat in the millennia previous. They thrived on fire and violence, with intense psychic battles producing burning conflagrations form which new progeny would emergy.

Eventually the Martians developed the means for interstellar flight, and attacked Earth. Atlantean magic handily repelled them, and Asgard set satellite guardians in place to monitor the planet.

An Atlantean plague-curse was released on Mars sometime before 16,000 BCE. It sterilized many Martians and slowed their birth rate. It also instilled a weakness to intense heat and a fear of fire in general, forcing Martians to reproduce through pair bonding.

Martians no longer existed as burning pyres of psychic rage. Instead, they developed an insectlike appearance with green skin and deep red eyes, though they retained their psychic talents. However, a unique mutation would strike just under 1% of the Martian population due to latent Celestial DNA patterns. This infant would have all the powers of the Martians, but be much stronger physically as well as more resistant to psychic influence. However, increased tendencies towards violence made them a lower social class-- White Martians were generally confined to their own regions, and ostracized from regular Martian society.

In 14,000 BCE, the White Martians attempted an invasion of Earth, in retribution for Atlantis' harsh manipulation of their species. Simultaneously, civil war broke out in Mars as White Martians sought to wrest control from the ruling caste of Greens.

The Martian invasion force encountered the Inhumans and ousted them from the Kree science colony vessel. With Kree science in hand, the White Martians recognized the much-craved Celestial DNA strains that were also present in their people before Atlantean sterilization. In retribution, they modified the Terrigen Mists to delete the coding for the Celestial genetic code, and released it into the upper atmosphere. 99.9% of the human species lost their metahuman genetic potential.

The invading White Martians then attempted to build permanent portals to their homeworld, but the damage to the Demiurge destabilized their efforts. The portal remains intermittently active in Central America to this day.

Five years later, the Green Martians gained enough of a foothold on Mars to pursue their enemies to Earth. They assisted the Inhumans with retaking their home on the Kree vessel, and many White Martians were lost to space in time when their transit portal was destroyed with an invading force en route.

The Greens prepared to withdraw with their cousins, but humanity had other ideas. The Inhumans burned down 100,000 acres of rain forest and killed the thousand remaining White Martians in the conflagration. This action so horrified the Green Martians that they abandoned their colony plans and returned to Mars. With dwindling birth rates and the loss of tens of thousands of Martians, the outlook for the species over the next millennia was lonely and bleak.

J'onn J'onnz came to Earth following the crash of a Kryptonian hyperspace pod in 1986. The first Martian to visit the planet in centuries, he concealed his identity using shapeshifting. Taking the name John Jones, he accepted a position as a private detective, similar to his duties as a Manhunter in the Martian police force.

Manhunters could sustain independent spaceflight, but not interstellar travel. A Manhunter can lift ten tons and is both extremely durable and self-repairing, able to sustain significant impacts from kinetic or energy weapons before being disabled. Their primary weapons were energy blasters connected to their internal conduits. Secondary utility options included nanorobotic injectors designed to subvert and brainwash their targets, broad-spectrum energy emissions, and intake manifolds that allowed them to absorb energy from the Emotional Spectrum of other Power Batteries. Manhunters sustain a constant interconnected network exchange of data and sensory input.
Manhunters were used extensively by Oa for millennia, until a rogue Oan uploaded a behaviour-modifying virus. Legions of Manhunters descended on Sector 0666 and murdered every sentient organic in the sector. Out of some twenty billion spread out across twelve worlds, only five survivors escaped. Universal outcry resulted in Oa destroying most of the remainder Manhunters and forcing the rest into deep storage on Oa as a military reserve force. Most of the remaining Manhunters were destroyed in the war with Krypton.

Tony Stark is, perhaps, the greatest mechanical engineer in the world. He is also the superhero known as Iron Man.

Anthony 'Tony' Edward Stark was born May 29, 1970. His parents were the Southhampton philanthropist Maria Stark nee Carbonell and her husband, billionaire industrialist Howard Stark.

From a young age Tony was a remarkable prodigy. He attended MIT at age 15 and graduated with dual degrees in mechanical engineering and physics in three years. A stint at Cambridge followed where Tony finished his terminal degrees in Mechanical and Electrical engineering, and picked up an MS in physics.

Following Cambridge Tony became a social dilettante, engaging in thrill-seeking activity and creating a reputation as a alcohol-besotted playboy. Reality crashed into him in 1995 when his parents were killed in a vehicle accident. Tony became the CEO of Stark Enterprises and ushered it into the 20th century.

In 2005, Tony was kidnapped by armed insurgents while touring the Middle East as part of a military arms promotion circuit. During the kidnapping he was wounded by shrapnel. It penetrated his atrial sac and severed several nerves, partially paralyzing his heart. Another prisoner, a surgeon named Yensen, helped install a portable arc reactor-powered pacemaker to keep the radiation contained and prevent the fragments from slipping into his heart.

While in captivity Tony constructed a suit of mechanized armor using scrap metal parts. He used this to escape, though Yinsen died during the attempt. Once back in the United States he refined the Iron Man armor into the Mk II design, which became the basis for dozens of suits over the following years.

(Please pardon our dust, we are still a work in progress)

Welcome to the Wiki for Legends and Legacies MUSH (telnet://refuge.imagination-evolution.net:9376).

This game has been assembled expressly to gather those who have abandoned other sites. Our hope is to develop a new game, together, that will learn from the mistakes we have seen elsewhere and try to do better.

Our game is unique. Our customized canon unifies history, theology, science, and even social issues between the Marvel and DC comics franchises. This allows us to produce a world with a rich and carefully established timeline that goes from the dawn of time into the modern era, and we pin down movers and shakers from the fall of Atlantis to World War II and even into the modern era.

If your boat isn't floating yet, consider the idea of Captain America, Peggy Carter, and T'chaka teaming up with Jor-El, Hippolyta, and Zinda Blake to punch Hitler in the nose. Because that has happened in our canon, and it is a timeframe that you can actively play in while maintaining a contemporary character as well.

We also address the tricky questions. Where do the gods come from? What happened to Atlantis? What exactly are metahumans and how have they affected the world?

Every character has a story, and every story has to start somewhere. We want you to build your stories on a framework that's developed from the ground up, instead of being tacked on to a sprawling narrative that has a janky and uncoordinated feel to it. We want to find a place for your stories in our larger world. Welcome!

Legends and Legacies invites you to not just add a character to the game, but to tell your character's part of our ongoing story.

Over eighty-some years of the comics industry, there have been so many plot arcs and earth-shattering developments that entire multiverses have been created. Characters have stepped into the limelight, been retired, come back, died, resurrected, and become godlings, and then rebooted. Sometimes twice in one year. How can players possibly reconcile the entire Marvel and DC Universe?

Our canon is built from the ground up as a living historical document. Our general history stretches back to the beginning of the universe, detailing the endless war between Celestials and Oans. We track cosmic battles, planetary conflicts, the rise and fall of Atlantis and even far-reaching plots by immortals, villain and hero alike. Asgard and Olympus exist side by side and on the same level. Captain America and the first Wonder Woman fought in World War II against Vandal Savage and Johann Schmidt.

Many games attempt to make "all possible concepts" workable for any new player. We see that there is value in the legacies of the heroic community. A world of metahumans needs mentors and retirees and old hands encouraging younger heroes to step up. We don't want to re-tell the same old stories, explore tired tropes, or simply repeat ad-nauseum the endless cycle of characters dipping in and out of our collective story as players pick them up and abandon them over time.

Those bygone eras may be revisited in RP and those individual stories can still be told! But we want characters to walk into their favorite bar and see old, yellowed photos of their mentors, parents, and friends up on the wall. There's a sense of wonder that comes from being part of not just a backdrop, but a story that spans eras. When the movie "Wolverine" came out, the extended title entrance of Logan and Victor fighting through a century of war made for a more fascinating film premise than the film itself. The title for "Watchmen" featured generations of heroes, their failures and exploits and lives and deaths, showing how they shaped and were shaped by the history of the world around them.

We want you to come here and tell your stories as part of our larger one. Join our narrative. Participate in building a larger, bigger, better world, whether you want to tackle the grand cold war between the Celestials and Oans; or, you want to tell the tale of your original character who is shouldering a family mantle.

Xavier's School for the Gifted was founded on the 1st of January, 1999. It is located in Westchester, New York, about eighty miles north-east of New York City. Officially it is n private preparatory school for exceptional students, offering education through 12th grade and into college advanced placement.

In reality Xavier's School for the Gifted is a home for metahumans to hone both their unique talents and their minds, in an environment monitored and supervised by other metahumans. After the Johnson-Kinsey Mutant Relocation Act in 2006, the population at Xavier's quadrupled almost overnight. Less than a year later, the 'First Class' of Xavier graduates took to the field to use their metahuman talents in the fight for equality. They have been dubbed the "X-Men" by the metahuman community aware of their existence, though are as much rumor as reality for most mutants at this point.

There are currently three 'classes' at Xavier's, though they are informal social sortings rather than being used for formal matriculation.

The First Class is the original gang of graduates, including Jean Grey and Scott Summers. Jean is the youngest, at 27 years old.

'Gen-X' includes mutants now in their early to mid-twenties. Most of them have graduated academically and stay on as teachers or coaches. Some live in the area and stay available for missions.

'New Mutants' include the students from around 15-21 years of age. Many of them are still enrolled scholastically full time, which does very little to keep them from getting into youthful hijinks.

The much-smaller Pacific Coast Institute is administered by a Xavier graduate and serves the metahuman population on the west side of the United States.

On a more serious note, every player should consider themselves their own OOC faction leader. Even if it's just a faction of one character. The upshot of this is that the first player in that larger faction gets to help set the stage for the rest of the faction. Superwoman's player, for instance will set up the timeline of events and family relationships that accommodate Kal-El, Conner, Zod, and all the other Kryptonians. The first Fantastic Four member will help flesh out the background that supports the others.

This is a privilege of public service, not a gift. The faction head is also expected to make sure their timeline marries perfectly with the theme. Plots and character changes need to integrate with the larger game canon and the Faction Leader must monitor those closely. There is a delicate balance between creating a framework for new players without forcibly locking them down into a single person's 'vision' for those following characters.

Reporting goes upstream. For instance, someone might pick Illyana Rasputina up and decide to set the stage for the New Mutants. Because the New Mutants spin off of the X-Men, this would have to be cleared with the X-Men 'faction head'. In turn, the X-men faction head will report to the Theme Wizard to keep the canon consistent and ordered.

Over time, Faction Leaders will spend less time managing timelines and theme as these things are written in stone, so to speak.
Nathaniel Richards, father of noted hero Reed Richards, is a time traveler who crops up repeatedly throughout human history. His own chronology is hopelessly tangled as his past and future selves reverberate through history, encountering past and possible versions of himself and even his descendants. With multiple temporal patterns converging in him at once it's possible that Nathaniel himself is never quite sure who is the 'authentic' Nathaniel Richards, and who is from a broken future or retconned past.

The Power Cosmic is a force of energy shared by primal entities and creatures described as gods. It is also called the 'Light of Creation', and is the source of power for the Heavenly Host. It springs from the Source, the singularity where all points of the multiverse meet.

It is a source of fundamental energy, allowing for primal forces to shape reality according to their strength of will and as their duties mandate. Harmony with the universe and willpower determine the effectiveness of the Power Cosmic-- primal entities often work through intermediaries to promote a harmony most akin to their individual mandate in order to strengthen themselves.

The First Gods were creatures composed entirely of the Power Cosmic, who dwelt along the interstitial space between the Source and the rest of the universe. When the Godkiller weapons were used, this space was rendered uninhabitable.

Galactus channels the Power Cosmic, as do the Celestials. Humans invoking the Power Cosmic often work a form of magic that allows them to emulate Enochian, to channel the power more efficiently.

Primarchs among the New Gods are capable of wielding the Power Cosmic. At the heart of their demesnes, the primarch functionally has unlimited willpower because they are in a state of maximum harmony with their surroundings.

The act of true creation requires channeling the Power Cosmic and shaping the raw material of the Astral Plane into reality. The language of the First Gods is called Enochian and serves as a means of shaping and channeling these tremendous energies more efficiently.

The troops were largely drawn from predominantly African-American companies, such as the famed Tuskeegee Airmen. 300 men were selected for the trials and forced to undergo experimental genetic therapy without their informed consent. Bradley and five others survived, with magnificently heightened human abilities (albeit to a lesser extant than Rogers had exhibited). They were created as a crack Commando unit operating in the Pacific theater.

Unfortunately the experimental serum had some negative side effects. Psychosis and violent aggressive tendencies manifested. One man in the unit went on a berserk killing spree and had to be killed by Bradley before civilians died. Another brutally assaulted several of his teammates in a confrontation over a local woman. Bradley's unit was dissolved days before they were slated to take over a major ground mission and destroy the last aircraft bases on Guadalcanal. They fought their way to freedom and plotted how to continue their mission.

Using falsified papers and radio communiques, Bradley assumed the role of Captain America and used the officer's brevet rank of field colonel to order the strike after all. He led the charge himself wearing Cap's costume and a copy of shield shield. This last charge broke the Japanese occupation of Guadalcanal as he captured their last pilots and airfield.

Bradley was arrested and awarded the Medal of Honor, then promptly stripped of rank and dishonorably discharged for impersonating an officer and disobeying orders. After being incarcerated for ten years, he received a pardon from Eisenhower in 1954.

The side effects of the modified serum began to affect Bradley's brain and he spent much of his later years living at home, working as a community volunteer. They adopted several neighborhood children and became steady foster parents, with Isaiah proving to be a doting and devoted father who could change a car tire with his bare hands, in a pinch.

In 1972, Bradley was introduced to his near-adult genetic son, Josiah Bradley. A product of Project: Black Womb, Josiah was grown in a test tube after dozens of failed experiments. The family reconnected and Josiah helped care for his father and adopted siblings. In time, Josiah married and had children of his own. His son Eli Bradley was born in 2003.
Eli was in a car accident in 2014 that required a massive blood transfusion.
The Super-Soldier program was developed as an advanced infantry program, trying to produce a 'superior' soldier from recruits who would be otherwise physically inadequate.

The chief architect of the US Super-Soldier program was Abraham Erskine and the mutant known as Nathaniel Essex. Essex's earlier efforts were derived from the Terrigen Mists, ancient Kree bioweapons developed to accelerate the mutation of the human genome. The leader of the Purifiers, Vandal Savage, selected Johann Schmidt as the first test subject for their experimental serum. The resultant metagene crisis vastly improved Schmidt's physical capability, but profoundly changed his appearance and drove him deeper into madness and egomania.

Erskine discovered Essex was performing his experiments upon detainees and captured soldiers. He was horrified to learn that Essex and Schmidt served a higher purpose than even the intolerable cruelty of the Third Reich.

Erskine fled to America and offered his knowledge to the Strategic Scientific Reserve. One more effort was made to repeat the project, called Project: Rebirth. Steve Rogers was selected as the test subject. The results were a resounding success. Erskine was assassinated moments later, taking the necessary detailed knowledge of the project to the grave. The remaining research materials were taken by Howard Stark and Thomas Wayne, and split between them in trust so no one could steal the data and duplicate the results. An attempt was made to replicate the Super Soldier Serum, but all attempts ended in disaster. The best nearest success for many years was Isaiah Bradley, 'Black Cap', a soldier from the Tuskeegee Company who led a special commando unit of Super Soldiers in the Pacific Theater.

Spin-off projects would be attempted intermittently over the following decades. The Department of Extranormal Operations established multiple sub-directorates and programs, including CADMUS, Weapon Plus, and Weapon X. Other research would periodically dip into the well of knowledge, producing The Hulk as Bruce Banner studied gamma-ray energies, and Luke Cage in an effort to produce medical research.

Unfortunately, the failure rate for the various super-soldier programs was staggeringly high. Many died. Others went insane or berserk with power. Only a handful could be remotely approximated as successes.

The precise nature of Lucifer's fall is not known to mortals. The Host claim that he was banished for trying to defy the Creator. Lucifer insists he was defending individual freedom and choice. Among confidants, he's even insisted that his rebellion is a false flag that is part of the Creator's plan. What's known is that he took a sizeable portion of Heaven's harmony with him when he fell, fundamentally altering the balance of power on a cosmic scale. Those Fallen who supported Lucifer retained much of their angelic powers as well.

Lucifer manifests as a male of the given species he's associating with, usually with the physical archetypes associated with members of the Host. However he has been known to take on female form at times, confusing inadequate human definitions of gendering a gender-less creature.

Lucifer amuses himself by nudging mortals this way and that, seeing who yields to temptation or breaks under duress. He is forbidden from directly interfering with mortal events, though like his brothers Gabriel and Uriel, he's found loopholes in his contract to exploit.

Lucifer currently is the de facto ruler of Hell. After several millon years of taking out his frustrations on unrepentant souls, he's grown somewhat bored with the job and largely leaves the day to day work up to a Triumvirate of demon lords.

The Amazons of Themyscira are a race of women created by several of the Goddesses of the Olympian pantheon.

Amazons are universally female and superficially diverse, bearing a resemblance to virtually every ethnicity or cultural group imaginable. Amazons are not truly immortal, but they age at a glacial rate. They are extraordinarily hardy and strong, taller and more powerfully built than many humans. Most Amazons can lift twenty tons over their heads and can easily outrun street traffic. They are virtually without peer in the realm of close combat, with blades or bare hands. Amazons can understand and be understood by all creatures native to worlds connected to the Demiurge. Amazons are quite intelligent and most of them have a talent for music, poetry, or the arts. As long as an Amazon stands on the soil of Themyscira, she cannot be claimed by death-- the dead lay in state for a day, and then new bodies are shaped into life by Athena.

History

They were brought into life approximately 1600 BCE, and their first home of old Themyscira was founded at the foot of Mount Olympus. The Goddesses of Olympus saw a need for Amazons to help preserve humanity against a cataclysm such as Ragnarok. Warriors to fight on behalf of the gods, but also to protect and preserve ancient knowledge and wisdom.

In 1400 BCE, the Mad Queen of Nimrud, Semiramis, convinced Hercules to steal the Girdle of Hippolyta as part of his 12 Labors for King Eurysthes. Foolishly, he agreed, unaware he was being manipulated.

On a condition of the gift, Hippolyta set many challenges before Hercules, who met them all triumphantly. Impressed, Hippolyta agreed to give Hercules the girdle as a gift from one cousin to another.

That night, Athena's brother, Ares, convinced Hercules that the Amazons would make a better gift for his half-brother King Eurysthes. Akhlys, Goddess of Poisons, gave Hercules a sleeping draught and he drugged the Amazons during a farewell feast. They awoke in chains and were forced to watch as the armies of Eurysthes sacked their home and razed it.

The Amazons prayed for release, and Athena delivered it to them. Hippolyta and two-thirds of the Amazons took Athena's offer, who broke their chains and spirited them away to a hidden island, newly christened Themyscira. There, the Amazons enjoyed immortality as long as they remained on the island. They trained relentlessly, honing themselves into warriors of legend, and were given a new mission: To guard Doom's Gate against anyone, mortal or magic, who attempted to pass through it.

Antiope disdained Athena's offer, and she and her sisters used their broken chains as weapons and overtook the city around them. Striking out after Hercules' forces, the army of Amazons blazed a path of destruction from Argos to Nimrud, where they confronted Semiramis. Their retribution caused the downfall of the Mycenaen Empire, the onset of the Dark Ages of Greece, and the death of Semiramis. The panther-goddess Bastet led them to an ancient, abandoned fortress-city in the deserts of Syria, a remnant of the Hyboran Era. They settled there and named it Baina-Mighdall.

When Oa and the Elder Gods coaxed the Demiurge to life in 50,000 BCE, magic fluxed and surged across the realms connected to that entity. New power flowed to all the realms, along the lines of travel called the World Tree, or Yggdrasil, by Asgard.

As the Demiurge settled into awareness, magic became a staple of the human condition. Shamanic traditions and crude totem worship were refined into religion, paving the way to sorcerous talents and then leading to the science of wizardry. Humanity's short, furious lives were nothing compared to the longevity of the New Gods, but they were whipped along by the forces of evolution and competition with startling speed. Humanity went from tribal huts and nomadic hunters to agrarian societies. Magic became so commonplace that entire societies and nations of magic-users gathered together. In 42,000 BCE, they raised a monument to their power, a city of tens of thousands of people and flourishing science and arts. They called this city Atlantis.

Atlantis began as one great city, but became seven united nations spread out across antiquity at the height of the power of the ancient Civilization of Atlantis. Each nation had specific areas of responsibility-- food, military power, magical research, culture and the arts, etc. The names of these cities are remembered in the ancient languages from prehistory.

Atlantis flourished as a culture and as a society. Magical talents were so commonplace that even the meanest of the lowest caste were capable of basic magical ability. Magic was studied as a scientific discipline instead of as a religious contemplation, allowing for the creation of vast machines and infrastructure that would have been otherwise impossible. Atlanteans made regular correspondence with the New Gods, and some-- such as Merlyn-- seemed close to equaling their power. There were even mortals who were approaching an ability to tap into the Source and channel the Power Cosmic itself. Humanity was poised to join the rest of the universe as peers.

In 15,000 BCE, Asgard's celestial war with the mighty Thanagar gained the attention of the Celestials. A violent first encounter with the Asgardians provoked a genocidal response. The Celestials went to war with the races of the Demiurge. They traveled to Earth, preparing to detonate a superweapon that would obliterate an entire galactic sector. They were destroyed at the eleventh hour by the Vishanti and the Demiurge, creating millions of ideologues by channeling the united willpower of all of humanity at once.

Atlantis would likely have survived the Cataclysm-- but they were betrayed by Morgana Le Fay, the Exile. Under the cover of the war she found the lost Cosmic Cube. Once again, Vandal Savage whispered in her ear at just the right moment, nudging strong emotions in the direction of the dark. In a moment of supreme, spiteful fury, she wished for vengeance with all the force centuries of hate could put behind her will.

The Old One known as C'thulu emerged from the Realm Between Worlds, and the panicked archmages were forced to use their combined power to manage his grave threat. The magi sealed him in a bubble of broken time and sank the city around him under the seas, the bound their spirits to the land to guard the rift for eternity. The city of R'lyeh became the first fatality of Ragnarok. Already pushed beyond the breaking point, the Demiurge was forced to expend the last of its power to trap C'thulu under the ocean. The Demiurge then went silent, reduced once more to a dreaming pre-sentient haze.

In a day and a night of fire, the mountains sank and the seas rose, and Atlantis was destroyed. Their mighty machines were powerless and their magic was sundered. Even basic communication became impossible. Some Atlanteans enacted desperate, last-minute measures to survive, creating domes of force to protect their undersea homes or creating mutations that allow them to breathe and adapt underwater.

The nations of Atlantis lost their key means of communicating with one another. Of the royal family, only two heirs survived. One of them took refuge in the Kingdom of Poseidonis, the smaller center of cultural heritage for Atlantis located south of Greenland. The other took up residence in the larger, more militant city of Tritonis, in the Pacific. In the aftermath of the Calamity, it was lost to the ages who has the true claim to the throne, and the two great nations have maintained embittered but distant relations since then.

Thousands of years of civilization were obliterated overnight. Magic on Earth dwindled to a mere trickle as the Earth entered the Hyborean Era, some score of millennia ago.

But evolution finds a way. Those mystics who survived the cataclysm were hardened by the lack of freely available power. They learned to channel their own willpower and focus, to gather energy from other life forms and spirits. Their progeny would go into the world with the genetic legacy of homo magi, buried for generations yet to come.

Hunger is a harsh mistress, and only the strong survive.

The Sorcerer Supreme is a title bestowed upon Earth's mystical champion.

In the realms attached to the Demiurge, the primarchs of the New Gods holds absolute sway over the reality of their realm. Earth is unique among the worlds of Yggdrasil in that it is located in the larger universe, rather than a demesne. Moreover, Earth contains gateways to hundreds of itinerant dimensions, each a potent reservoir of cosmic energy and souls.

The Sorcerer Supreme is charged with protecting Earth from mystical threats. Particularly, eldritch creatures who are beyond mere mortal weapons and ability. The Sorcerer Supreme is required to maintain the balance of power between the worlds of Yggdrasil, including checking unjustified expansion, wars of aggression, or attempts to usurp power.

The Sorcerer Supreme is empowered thusly by a triumvirate of powerful entities: The Vishanti. These potent Elder Gods channel their energy and wisdom through the Sorcerer, making the person an avatar of their will. Even without the Vishanti's gifts, most Sorcerers Supreme are formidable spellcasters in their own right. One of the gifts granted to the Sorcerer Supreme is custodianship of the Eye of Agamotto, a secret relic that regulates the power of the Time Stone concealed inside its frame.

The Infinity Stones are concentrated ingots of absolute ideologue power. When the First Firmament shattered, many of the First Gods perished in the conflagration of reality undoing itself. Six of them, absolutely essential components of the mechanics of the universe itself, were trapped in a state of quantum flux between the First Firmament and the resulting universes. Infinity stones therefore exist in all realities in the multiverse but only function in their universe of origin, a permanent bridge between the multiverses and the First Firmament.

An entity in possession of all six of the stones can use them to fundamentally re-order the universe to shape it to suit their desires. The Stones appear many times through galactic history, often in the hands of warlords and desperate fools who do not understand their power. Relatively few creatures can channel the immense Power Cosmic that flows unhindered through the stones and the results of anything less than an ironclad will directing them can be dangerously unpredictable.

Only once were all six stones assembled, in 2014. The Mad Titan Thanos successfully obtained all six stones and used them to wipe out half of all life in the universe as a gift for Death. The assembled Infinity Gauntlet was used to reverse the effects of his 'finger snap' and the stones were redistributed to trustworthy allies.

Soul Stone - Possibly the most powerful of all the stones, the Soul Stone influences the soul and can leverage the near-infinite power of the human spirit. Souls trapped by the stone spend eternity in an idyllic paradise, unaware of the passage of time.

Time Stone - The time stone provides unhindered access to the flow of time. It is capable of sustaining even major paradoxes and causal loops that would otherwise self-terminate in a closed spacetime environment. It is currently in the possession of the Sorcerer Supreme and closely monitored by Agamotto of the Vishanti.

Space Stone - By using the space stone, the user has unrestricted access to the warp of space itself. They can alter the spatial characteristics of virtually any object in the universe. The Space Stone was used by Thanos several thousand years ago to scatter a solar system across ten galactic sectors.

Mind Stone - The Mind Stone's history is better known than some. It contains the crystallized essence of an early incarnation of the ideologue known as Dream. By tapping into the power of the Astral plane, the bearer of the Mind Stone can access the collective consciousness of all intelligent life in the universe. No knowledge is hidden from such an individual. Darkseid attempted to obtain the Mind Stone to aid him in his quest for the Anti-Life Equation. It is now part of the synthetic life form known as Vision.

Reality Stone - The laws of reality and universal physics can be rewritten at will by the bearer of this stone. Even fundamental laws such as gravity and subatomic motion can be subverted or altered. It requires a particularly potent mind and resolute will to use this gem effectively or the result may cause localized spacetime to collapse.

Power Stone - A conduit to the concept of 'power' itself. All energy and force can serve the will of this stone's user and it imbues the carrier with awesome, even unchecked physical power. It is this stone that is the 'engine' of the assembled Infinity Gauntlet and drives the power of the others into levels impossible to contemplate.
