The Ghostbusters were a quartet of four men who became the first 'licensed paranormal exterminators', activated first in 1983.

Dr. Peter Venkman recruited longtime friends Dr. Raymond Stantz and Dr. Egon Spengler to help develop tools and apparatus to capture and contain paranormal creatures. Winston Zeddemore was hired on after the recommendation of [[John Constantine]], who had become a reliable consultant for the nascent crew. Dr. Egon Spengler used an unlicensed, modified [[Tesla Tokamak]] reactor to power the energy weapons that restrained spiritual entities.

The Ghostbusters were active in New York during a particularly tumultuous number of years, from a cosmic perspective. Major planar intersections turned New York into a locus of magical forces, resulting in many spirits and semi-incorporeal entities breaching the Astral plane and manifesting as spirits of the recently dead.

As of 1989, the Ghostbusters were more or less disbanded and turned to other careers. However, they were clued in to the nascent presence of Vigo the Carpathian, a legendary 16th century [[sorcerer|homo magi]] who had been trapped in a painting bearing his likeness. The Ghostbusters successfully stopped Vigo's attempt to utterly subvert New York with a deluge of psycho-reactive ectoplasm drawn from the [[Astral Plane]]. Upon banishing Vigo fully, the ectoplasm dissolved and the city of New York returned more or less to normal.

As of 2018, the Ghostbusters are retired and moved into roles as consultants in the paranormal fields and high-energy systems.
