The House of Mystery is a unique item, old as humanity itself. It is a tiny echo of the mighty [[Demiurge]], a 'spawnling' possessed of limited intelligence and power. The House of Mystery occupies a demesne adjacent to the Demiurge and acts as a 'cap' on several extradimensional paths that lead perilously close to the Demiurge's extraplanar location.

The House of Mystery assembled itself into a home of sorts after [[Cain]] murdered his brother [[Abel]]. For millennia the two men dwelt there, often contacted by [[Dream|Endless_Dream]] or his minions as humanity whipped itself along the path of evolution. Dream and the other [[Endless]] banished Cain and Abel to the House for a timeless epoch, hoping that time would heal all wounds. It largely has not worked.

Sometime in the early 20th century, the immortal witch [[Elvira]] became steward of the House. She maintained it until 1975, when the magus [[John Constantine]] was appointed steward by the House. John maintains he won it in a friendly game of poker; Elvira insists that it was strip poker, there were a few extra-dimensional beings showing poor hands, and John swindled her after promising to throw his hand so she could clean them out.
