Janet van Dyne was born in 1960. She was the daughter of Professor Van Dyne, an associate of Dr. [[Hank Pym]].

She and Hank married in 1978 after her father was killed while researching the nature of the [[Pym Particle]]. A few years later, she discovered Hank's alter-ego as 'Ant-Man' and insisted on joining him in the field. Dubbing herself 'The Wasp', Janet made a name for herself as an effective leader and field combatant.

She took a leave of absence in 1980 after becoming pregnant, to give birth to her daughter [[Hope Van Dyne|Hope Pym]]. She returned to the fold in 1982, re-assuming the mantle of 'The Wasp'.

In 1985, she divorced an increasingly unstable and erratic Hank Pym who was suffering from undiagnosed psychosis exacerbated by his frequent use of the Pym Particle.

In 1986, Janet sacrificed herself to defeat the [[synthetic]] code-named [[Ultron]]. She overloaded her suit regulator and vanished into the Quantum Realm. Her allies held a funeral for her shortly thereafter, driving a wedge between them and Hank who refused to accept that Janet was dead.
