Otherwise an unremarkable Baltic nation, Sokovia became a flashpoint for metahuman rights following the passage of the [[Mutant Relocation Act]] in the United States. Similar laws were passed across the globe, resulting in many displaced metahuman refugees. A substantial number of them settled in Sokovia, one of the few nations that didn't pass sweeping laws regarding regulation, deportation, or registration.

With the rest of the world forcibly deporting metahumans en masse, Sokovia found itself grappling with an increased need for a police force capable of managing metahuman crises. Anti-refugee sentiment surged and the hardliners turned to [[Luthor Industries]] and their [[Sentinel]] metahuman hunters. Excessive use of force would become a hallmark of Sentinel actions, suppressing metahumans across the small nation.

In 2016, the Sentinel Uprising hit Sokovia particularly hard. Overnight, Sentinels began rounding up metahumans to be imprisoned in concentration camps. Those who resisted were executed, resulting in thousands of metahumans dying around the globe in the course of a month. The metahuman resistance fought back hard, and the resulting battlefront created a civil war that virtually destroyed Sokovia.
