He met and married Martha Wayne shortly before graduating from med school, and the two swiftly rose to the top of Gotham's social elite.

On December 16 1995, Thomas and his wife Martha were gunned down outside the Gotham Opera House in a botched mugging. This left their son [[Bruce Wayne]] the sole inheritor of the Wayne mantle, and an orphan.

The botched mugging was in fact part of a Soviet plot to spur the United States into re-opening the [[Super Soldier]] program, as the Wayne family held a trust shared with [[Howard Stark]] that retained control of [[Abraham Erskine]]'s original formula.
