The Winchester family is a long and storied ancestry among hunters of the supernatural elements. They rarely have more than two children, leaving relatively few distant cousins or strange branchings.

The most notable members of the Winchester family are [[Sam Winchester]] and his brother [[Dean Winchester]]. The two brothers are exceptionally talented hunters, despite having no inherent magical or metahuman talents.

In 2016, Dean and Sam were pitched against each other as a pair of ancient and powerful [[First Gods]] renewed an ancient battle for dominion of the [[Life Entity]] and the power of the [[Demiurge]]. [[Chthon]] sought the death of the Entity, so Chthon could fuel the advent of the Black Light of the [[Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum]]. [[Atum]], son of [[Gaea]], sought to weaponize the power of the [[Life Entity]] and erase all life in the Demiurge to relieve the scars and wounds the [[Demiurge]] suffered.

Sam and Dean were selected to be the avatars for the conflict between Chthon and Atum, with the dark god manifesting through Sam and the warrior through Dean. They evaded this fate until the eleventh hour, aided by powerful magi such as [[John Constantine]], [[Zatanna Zatara]], [[Stephen Strange]], and [[Kent Nelson]]. Ultimately, the gods had their way and disaster loomed. Where the mightiest of wizards had failed, though, grit and determination carried the day. Sam and Dean fought through the control of their souls and bound Atum and Chthon to one another, and dropped the two gods into a pocket dimension perilously near the [[Realm Between Worlds]]. Both fell into eternity, too locked in battle with one another to offer any resistance or seek escape.
