During the Cold War, the KGB authorized a sabotage/deep surveillance operation code-named 'Moose/Squirrel'. Operative Moose was supposed to conduct clandestine operations of docks, factories, and shipping yards; Operative Squirrel was tasked with observation of high society and financiers.
When the USSR collapsed and the FSB inherited the program, they maintained the identity of these operations. 'Moose and Squirrel' remain an effective surveillance and sabotage team in the United States, accepting that they will be disavowed if captured or subverted.
