The first person to call themselves The Flash was the Golden Age speedster known as Jay Garrick. Exposure to a lab accident triggered a latent metagene that gave him access to an extradimensional power known as The Speed Force.
In 2004 Barry Allen was in proximity to a lab accident. Similar to Jay Garrick, he discovered he had developed an ability to access the Speed Force and accomplish incredible feats with it.
Several years later he adopted a protege, a young man named Wally West. Wally would become one of the first members of the Teen Titans, a group of young superheroes making a name for themselves.
