Vampirism: genetic or mystical affliction?
Genetic (Dresden, Blade): Hominus Nocturne, retroviral infection passed along by consumption or transfusion of vampire blood. The change usually takes a week and is consummated by the act of consuming human blood.
Mystical (Anne Rice, WoD) : Consuming vampire blood kills the human body and resurrects it moments later. The change happens fairly swiftly. The resulting creature is 'undead', lacking any soul and something of an intellectual zombie-- all knowledge and experiences, but no philosophy to temper the hunger or desires.
