Knowhere is located on the edge of known space. It is the hollowed out skull of a Celestial, killed in battle ages ago.
The vital components of the Celestial are extremely valuable, including spinal fluid, brain matter, and bone marrow. Several mining operations have started and stopped fitfully on Knowhere. More valuable still is Knowhere's proximity to several little-known warp conduits and gate locations, while being quite distant from most major galactic hubs and governments.
Knowhere is a lawless place ruled by whomever decides they have the will or strength to rule those living there. Government rarely lasts and most smugglers prefer it that way. Loose consortiums of gangsters keep crime on a 'manageable' level.
