Rule A

First and foremost, this game is a safe place.

  • If a player cannot be kind, they must at least be courteous.
  • If they cannot be courteous, they should be quiet.
  • And if they cannot be quiet, they are welcome to play elsewhere.

Rule 1

The Staffers reserve the right to use judgement in matters of policy. Good players need few rules and bad players don’t obey them anyway.

Other Rules

Consent

Consent is the single most consistent cause of conflict in multiplayer games. It is vital that players clearly and frequently communicate with one another to establish clear objectives for roleplay and for the consequences thereof.

Consent is a safeguard to protect players from abuse. Consent requires Clarity (what the problem is), Continuity (consent is an ongoing action), and Consistency (it is not to be invoked casually).

Consent can take several forms. In terms of gameplay, nothing happens to your character unless you agree to let it happen. (It’s very bad form to use consent to avoid unfavorable in-game consequences of your actions.)

You are under no obligation to accept an invitation to scene or private conversation.

Consent means that you do not have to endure bullying or abuse as a character or as a player. If a scene moves outside the scope of your expectations, you can request to have it amended, to have a staffer mediate, or have the scene struck from the records entirely.

If you are asked not to speak to someone, then do not speak to them. If you ask someone not to speak to you, they need to respect this. That goes both ways-- consent is not a tool for silencing criticism from only one direction, nor is it a tool for silencing public forums.

Romance

Romance is a part of storytelling and the extent people express it is a matter of personal comfort. Romance in general requires a clear expression of intent and consent from all parties. 'No' means 'No, and don't ask again'. Sexually explicit or highly suggestive roleplay should be confined to private rooms.

Explicit depictions of sexual activity involving characters OR PLAYERS under the age of 18 is absolutely prohibited. No exceptions. Transmission of obscene or explicit material to a minor may be a violation of Federal Code 18 USC 1470 as well as your state laws. Noncompliance will result in a permanent ban.

Copyright & Fair Use

Legends and Legacies is a product of interactive fiction produced for entertainment use only. All copyrighted materials, themes, stories, and characters are owned by their respective publishers/creators. No copyrighted materials may be distributed with the intent for profit.

Staff reserves the right to maintain use of original characters and concept designs for purposes of game continuity. This should not be construed as possession of the intellectual property of the player.

Players here consent to have their characters, roleplay, plot ideas, and related content published on our game’s official website, wiki, or any mailing list or forum. Anyone wishing to purchase or utilize original concepts, themes, characters, or concepts for commercial or personal use must receive contractual permission from the creators. No staff member, administrator, or player of Legends and Legacies shall be held responsible for any liability or loss of wages from contracts, agreements, or misuse of copyrighted material.

Activity Requirements

There are none. Life happens. People get sick or hurt or distracted and we will absolutely work with you. Otherwise, we just expect people to act reasonably like adults when it comes to managing their characters and their responsibilities. Mandating RP usually just turns into a few months of coffee shop scenes.

We do make logging services available on the wiki, and these serve two purposes. The first is that any logged scene is officially canon for your character. If it ain't logged, it didn't happen. Second: If you don't have any recent logs, and someone expresses interest in your character, we will approach you about potentially giving the other player access. This is handled by staff request and mitigated by several factors, including things like +votes, number of alts, plot participation, and if you haven't logged into the charbit for a prolonged period. But that is a conversation that will happen-- not a consequence that is simply inflicted. A character who goes without a login for 30 days may be set Available, though it will not be a forced drop.
